Olney, Richard
(15 sep. 1835, Oxford, Mass., EE.UU.–8 abr. 1917, Boston, Mass.).

Estadista estadounidense. Como ministro de justicia (1893–95) en el gobierno del pdte. Grover Cleveland, sentó un precedente cuando recurrió a un mandato judicial para terminar con la huelga de Pullman (1894). Fue designado secretario de estado en 1895 y debió enfrentar la petición de apoyo de Venezuela en su disputa con Gran Bretaña por el límite entre Venezuela y Guayana Británica. La agresiva nota que envió a Gran Bretaña, conocida como Corolario Olney, le exigía que sometiera el conflicto a arbitraje y reafirmaba la soberanía de EE.UU. en el hemisferio occidental, en virtud de la doctrina Monroe. De hecho, el asunto quedó resuelto por arbitraje dos años después de que Olney se retirara en1897.
